6 Ways to Reduce Human Error in Your Business

Running a business is never easy, and one of the things that really makes it more difficult than it needs to be is human error. To err is human, as they say, but when it happens a lot, it can send your business south faster than you can shake a stick.

1. Standardize your procedures

One of the best ways to reduce human error within your company is undoubtedly to standardize your procedures. Doing so in a clear, concise, and consistent way is an excellent way to prevent confusion amongst your staff while also reducing error and boosting productivity. You can start by coming up with clear processes, documenting and training in them, and then take it from there.

2. Regular training and education

Another thing you should definitely consider doing if you’re serious about doing away with as much human error in your business as possible, is to ensure that your team are as well-trained as possible. When your team have all of the training and education they need in your industry, they will, naturally, be much less likely to make mistakes of any kind. You will never do away with 100 percent of human error (unless you do away with 100 percent of your human employees) but if you implement a system of continuous learning and development, you will see instances of it reduce significantly.

3. Encourage open communication

People are much less likely to make mistakes at home when they know what is expected of them, which is why creating an open and honest culture, where employees are never afraid to communicate any issues they are having, is essential. An open communication environment encourages the early detection of errors, enabling prompt corrective action. Regular team meetings, an open-door policy,  and anonymous feedback options are all good practices to promote open communication.

4. Make use of technological tools 

In our digital era, there’s a plethora of technological tools designed to reduce human error. Field service management software, for instance,  is a prime example. This technology can automate many routine tasks, reducing the chance of manual mistakes.

There is no denying that the happier and healthier your employees are, the less likely they will be to make mistakes. When someone is feeling stressed out, under pressure, and less well than usual, then they are not going to be working on their A-game and things could very easily go wrong.

There are a number of ways you can go about this from offering a better work-life balance through shorter hours of flexi-time to subsidizing the cost of a gym membership, and of course, not overloading any one employee with work assignments, so do your best to make it happen. 

As you can see, there are a number of fairly easy to implement, things you can do to cut down on the threat of human error in your business, and doing so is a great way to improve your company’s productivity and your employees’ happiness levels at the same time as minimizing mistakes, so it makes all-round sense for you to make an effort. Just remember that it won’t happen overnight, and you will be on a learning curve to get to where you want to be, but eventually, it will happen!
