Are You Overlooking the Dangers Your Children Face At Home?

It’s easy for parents to think that their children are naturally safe in their home. After all, that’s the point of a house, isn’t it? It’s a haven away from the dangers of the world. But, your children could still be in danger even when they are confined within those four walls. When do you worry about your children the most? It’s probably either when they are out with friends or on their way to or from school. When they’re with you at home, you think they’re safe. But you’d be surprised by the threats your children could face in the comfort of their home.

Are You Overlooking the Dangers Your Children Face at Home

Break-Ins

Crime is on the rise and if you think being in a good neighborhood will protect you, well it won’t. Thieves are more likely to target homes in good neighborhoods. They know these are the properties with expensive items. So, you should be thinking about how to protect your family from a break in no matter where you live. First, you should think about setting your home up as a deterrent. A nice neighborhood won’t prevent thieves from trying their luck. But, if you set up security cameras and other security systems from a business like ADT home security, they’ll certainly think twice. But it’s not just about stopping a break-in from happening.

You need to be prepared for what to do after a break-in occurs. The biggest step you can take here is to install a panic room in your house. This will cost about as much as a home renovation project and it’s a far better value for money. You’ll be taking an important step, protecting the lives of your children.

Environmental Dangers

There are a few environmental dangers that you need to be aware of in your home. It’s quite possible if you live in an older house, there are harmful substances hidden in your walls. If you can, it’s best to get this checked out. Particularly, if your home was built before the late eighties. If that’s the case, Asbestos might still have been used for insulation. While harmless if undisturbed, once spores start to escape to the air, they can be life-threatening. A quick home survey will tell you if there’s a problem like this, putting your children in danger.

Poor Water

Kids are better to drink water than fizzy drinks, right? Well not necessarily. Reports have recently shown that a lot of home water supplies have high levels of fluoride. This has been shown to have a negative impact on IQ levels in children. It can even cause severe brain damage. If you want to protect your children, you may want to get a good water filter. That way, you can guarantee they won’t be drinking dangerous chemicals.

Weather Warning

You have to be careful letting children stay inside all day, particularly in the middle of summer. On hot days, children are better off outside, particularly if your home doesn’t have good air conditioning. A hot day could cause your child to suffer from dehydration, particularly if you let them stay in their room. It has been known for children to have to be rushed to the hospital, simply because their parents didn’t check they were staying hydrated.

I hope this article helps you understand your children aren’t automatically safe at home. You have to make sure they are protected.

  1. These are things not everyone thinks of, good to know. People also need to realize dangers of prescription drugs, household chemicals, things like that, not just toddlers, but sometimes older kids may not realize something is very flammable, etc.
