Capital One Banking Reimagined

Here at Life in a House of Testosterone, Murphy’s Law is a daily fact of life. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. So, real life got in the way of me finishing my three-post feature on the Capital One Banking Reimagined Tour. If you remember, I posted the first article on March 17 to tell you about the tour I would be attending on Saturday, March 18 at the Short Pump Town Center.

It was amazing … and I can’t wait to tell you all about it! But first, I want to describe my own personal banking experience with you.

Does Your Bank Excite You?

Now let me ask you a question, when you go to your bank – do you get excited? Are you greeted by individuals who are happy to see you? Willing to help you with any issue you might be having or help you plan for a vacation, retirement, your future? Does your bank take an active interest in YOU and what YOU want your money to do – or are they more concerned with meeting their own quota of IRA accounts to open for the month?

I’ve been a member of Truliant Federal Credit Union for over 20 years. When I first moved to Richmond, there were several branch offices throughout the counties where you could do your banking without having to go to the main branch. Over the years; however, those branch offices were closed until all that was available was a credit union service center on our side of town with limited capabilities.

Having to drive 40 minutes across town to meet with a banking representative who could help me manage my finances, plan for retirement, plan for a vacation or just starting a Christmas Savings Account – was just not feasible. With our revolving door, here at home (or so it seems), it wasn’t always easy to hold a long telephone conversation with someone at the home office in North Carolina either to help with my finances. It also didn’t help that after 20 years of being a member and asking to open a checking account, I was refused year after year after year simply because my credit was less than stellar.

There had to be a better way. There had to be a better way of banking. And there is – from Capital One.

Capital One Banking Reimagined Tour - Short Pump Town Center - March 18, 2017

The Banking Reimagined Tour

I arrived at the Short Pump Town Center around 10AM and this big beautiful blue truck was waiting to greet me, along with Tyler, my contact point. Tyler introduced me to Courtney, who took me around the corner to meet Sean at the Capital One Cafe before we went through the actual Banking Reimagined Tour. You’ll just have to wait for the Cafe post till a little later!

Once we picked up some delicious coffee from Peet’s at the Cafe, Courtney and I headed back to the trailer to meet Shannon, who took me through the Banking Reimagined Tour.

Thank you Capital One for sponsoring this post! This is a paid endorsement. All opinions are my own and were not directed by Capital One. To learn more about Capital One, visit www.capitalone.com/cafes OR www.capitalone.com/bankingreimagined.

The whole point of the Banking Reimagined Tour is to help people start thinking – and talking – about their personal finances in a new and engaging way. 60% of consumers use online banking at least weekly, yet 87% of us still crave a place to go with human interaction to complement that online experience. We also want that interaction to be relaxing, not stressful, and we want to feel as though we matter – that whatever it is we are dealing with, someone is going to be there to dive into it with us and help us find ways to visualize our ideal financial situation, identify our goals, and help us make them a reality.

So, the first thing that Shannon had me do was answer a few questions about what was important to me, as a person, as a woman, as a mother, on the advanced interactive touchscreens. We went through a series of screens and selected what option we would rather do – to get a feeling of where we wanted our money to take us. Then the next series of questions were simply yes or no on what was important to us, our values, our beliefs. You can take the quiz too right here!

The things that I value the most are being accepting of others, being community minded, honest and I respect others. True, true and true. Then it was time to hit the HoloLens Augmented Reality – where we had the opportunity to test out some cutting-edge technology that let us interact with 3D holographic imagery in real space and time.

Coming from someone who has (a) never seen a 3D movie and (b) never experienced anything holographic – this was freaking neat! I know I looked like a complete dork trying to touch the objects in front of me but hey – this was a new experience and I was thrilled to get a chance to try out the holographic imagery!

This nice young man helped me get the system going and then I was on my own. It was a hoot!

Then it was the end of the tour and a chance to record a message for my future self with the knowledge I’d gained from the experience.

Don’t you wish that everything in life could be like that? That we could record messages for our future selves to remind us of steps we need to take, things that we want to do, dreams that we want to turn into a reality?

Reimagining Finances, Perspectives & Relationships

I hated banking. After taking the Banking Reimagined Tour though, I was really excited about learning more and finding ways to save and still be able to do more of what I love with my family.

So excited, that I opened my own Capital One 360 checking account and closed my other account that I’ve had over 20 years. I’ve been talking non-stop about Capital One so much at home, that hubby opened his own Capital One 360 checking account too!

I’m a tech geek – love being able to do everything electronically. I can deposit checks, pay bills, handle my entire account from the comfort of my couch with the apps available from Capital One.
