Learning Disabilities ARE Neurological Disorders!

Wednesday, September 18, 2013 by Kimberly Miller

My 13-year-old son has ADHD. To look at him, he is like every other gangly, teenage boy. You cannot tell just by looking at him, that he has a neurological disorder. His behavior can be outrageous, impulsive, and downright daredevil scary (to a parent) when he doesn't take his medication. When he was younger, I've had people approach me and tell me that I need to discipline him better, that I was a terrible parent for not teaching him manners. It would become especially hurtful when I would tell these well-meaning people that he had … [Read more...] about Learning Disabilities ARE Neurological Disorders!

Tend to Your Teeth: Which 5 Halloween Candies to Eat and to Avoid

Thursday, September 12, 2013 by Kimberly Miller

Forget spooky ghouls and goblins — for dentists, candy is the scariest thing about Halloween. In 2012, the incidence of cavities among preschoolers was on the rise for the first time in 40 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Poor dietary choices contribute to this increase in dental health problems. To protect your kids’ pearly whites, teach them about smart candy choices this Halloween season. To make the message stick, use coloring sheets such as those on the Kool Smiles app to educate kids about how … [Read more...] about Tend to Your Teeth: Which 5 Halloween Candies to Eat and to Avoid

7 Facts You Need to Know About ADHD - Life in a House of Testosterone

Living with ADHD is hard. Being the parent of someone with ADHD is hard. Being the teacher of someone with ADHD is hard. Together, with understanding, we can make it through, we can make a difference. October is National ADHD Awareness Month. Since my eldest son was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of six, I've done everything in my power to educate myself, to educate him, and to better understand how his mind perceives the world around him and to understand that my 'normal' is not his normal. I'd like to share 7 Facts You Need To Know … [Read more...] about 7 Facts You Need to Know About ADHD

Bedtime and the ADHD Child

Monday, September 2, 2013 by Kimberly Miller

Tomorrow is the first day of school for my 10-year-old and my 13-year-old ADHD child. That means a 8:00 p.m. shutdown of all games and televisions and a 9 p.m. lights out routine once again on school nights in the hopes that they will both be asleep by 10 p.m. The thought has crossed my mind to drug them with horse tranquilizers, but since I don't own a horse, and don't know a veterinarian, that's out of the question. The warm milk I can do ... if I could get them to drink it. (It's a joke about the tranquilizers people, don't go all crazy on … [Read more...] about Bedtime and the ADHD Child

Breakfast Ideas for the ADHD Child

Sunday, August 4, 2013 by Kimberly Miller

Breakfast is vitally important - for all of us - as it is the fuel that jump starts your day and keeps you going. For children with ADHD, having high-protein foods in their diet is a must, along with cutting out the sugar but not taking away from the taste. We all know, if it doesn't taste and smell good - they are NOT touching it! ADHD children who are on stimulant medications have little to no appetite once they have taken their medication. To help you get the fuel that they need into their bodies in the morning before school, consider … [Read more...] about Breakfast Ideas for the ADHD Child

Natural Skin Care Made Simple: The Benefits of Grapeseed Oil

Friday, June 28, 2013 by Kimberly Miller

Everyday, women are bombarded with ads that tell them how to live better, happier, and more beautifully. Companies try to sell us products, promising that their merchandise will make our hair shinier, our skin clearer, and our health better. Many of these manufacturers are telling the truth, but what they’re not telling you is that you can often have the same benefits at a fraction of the price by turning to age-old, natural remedies, used by women for hundreds of years. One product that has many skin care benefits is grape seed oil and you … [Read more...] about Natural Skin Care Made Simple: The Benefits of Grapeseed Oil
