Friday Finds #14 – Mother’s Day Edition

I am of the opinion that children never really appreciate their mothers fully until they become parents themselves. Lord knows I sure did not appreciate my mother until I became one. There were so many things that she did that I looked at in a critical manner and questioned her reasons for doing what she did … but as a parent, her reasons and actions made perfect sense to me then.

So naturally, with Mother’s Day being celebrated across the United States this Sunday, May 12th, we just had to share some of our favorites with you just in case you procrastinated and still haven’t made plans to celebrate with the mom in your life.

Salonpas Wishes Mom a Pain-Free Day

As much as I hate to admit it, getting older brings about some aches and pains that can be debilitating at times. My two pain points are my knees and my back. I’ve tried every kind of over-the-counter medication, cream, brace, spray you can think of. Salonpas is the one and only product that has given me any measure of relief. Sound like your mom? Well might I suggest a gift basket of Salonpas products for her this Mother’s Day?

The folks at Salonpas were kind enough to send me a smorgasboard of their products that I absolutely love. Some were already staples in my medicine cabinet (such as the Salonpas Jet Spray and the Pain Relieving Patches) and I have really enjoyed using the Salonpas Deep Relieving Gel and the Salonpas Lidocaine Plus Pain Relieving Cream

I cannot tell the why behind this – however, I had some prescription strength lidocaine patches for my knees from a physician that could not TOUCH the relief that I got from the Salonpas Pain Relieving Gel Patch. Quite honestly, it is the only pain relief product that I have used exclusively for the past year or more.

So if you have a mom who tries to fight through the aches and pains associated with getting older with a smile on her face, why not give her the gift of a pain-free Mother’s Day this year with a basket of Salonpas products? You can find them at your local Wal-Mart, drug store, or online at Amazon.

Salonpas Day is May 18th

“Koriwoi Yasu” translates from Japanese to “relieve stiffness” and contains references to the numbers 5, 1, and 8 – so what better day to celebrate Salonpas Day!

In cities including Boston and Tokyo, employees from Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical Co., Inc. (the manufacturer of Salonpas) will educate consumers about patch treatment while distributing thousands of free Salonpas patches.

For those of you who live or work in the Boston area, visit the Greenway Open Market in the Wharf District Parks between 11AM and 3PM or in Cambridge at the area around Harvard Square during the same time.

Don’t forget to check the sky between noon and 3PM to catch the celebratory airplane banner flying above Boston and Cambridge, and keep an eye out for their newspaper ads in the Boston Globe and Boston Herald.

Maker’s Mark Mint Julep and #CocktailsForCleanups

Maker's Mark Mint Julep Recipe

Summer is synonymous with mint juleps in the south where we live. I am doubly blessed to have some amazing Maker’s Mark bourbon to add to my fresh mint growing wild in the garden area off our patio deck, so for Mother’s Day there will be Mint Juleps for everyone 21 and older! Here’s the recipe if you want to make up one (or three!) for mom this Mother’s Day!

Mint Julep

With pronounced sugar and mint notes, the Mint Julep is one of our favorite bourbon cocktails and a natural match for warmer weather, horse races, and good company. This year, when you make your julep with Maker's Mark and post a pic with #CocktailsForCleanups, you'll help support our mission to remove trash from the world's oceans and waterways.

Mother’s Day for Dog Moms

Have you ever wondered just what it is your dog is thinking? Do you ever wish that you had the ability to understand their view of the world and what they were thinking, feeling? A Thousand Lifetimes: The Story of a Woman and Her Dog shares an emotional love story between Maria Reich and her rescued, deaf pit bull, Celestial (Celeste for short), as told by Reich and Celeste – through animal communicator Carol Harrison.

Their journey begins when the occasional intuitive Reich is given a message “there will be a deaf dog” on her way to make a donation to her local animal shelter. She wasn’t looking for another dog, but fate put Celeste in her path again. As Reich later learned after Celeste passed, their two souls were meant to be together, always have been and will be again in divine timing. This memoir follows their journey this time around, as Reich experiments with natural care and telepathy to ease Celeste’s health ailments and behavioral issues, and Celeste uses an animal communicator to warn her about the risk of starting a pet supplement company.

A Thousand Lifetimes provides untapped insight into the psyche of animals from their own quirky points of view. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that anyone who has ever loved an animal needs to ride. The book helps open people’s minds and hearts to the rich emotional and thought-filled lives of their animals, offers possibilities of reasons why their animals behave the way they do, gives insight into the shelter dog experience, and shows how dogs communicate with each other. Exposing all sides, this can lead owners to more harmonious relationships with pets who are viewed as “stubborn” or difficult. Above all, the book provides peace of mind that our pets who have passed on still exist in spirit form and their love prevails.

You can read an excerpt from the book HERE or purchase a copy on Amazon. Let me warn you, I read the excerpt … and the book is now in my shopping cart because I need to know what happens next. You’ve been warned!

Celebrating Mothers Everywhere

I come from a long line of women who have been nurturers. I don’t remember a single woman in my family who didn’t mother me in some way, shape, or form growing up. Aunts, grandmothers, female friends of my mother … they all mothered me in various ways, and I love each and every one of them for the part that they have played in my life to make me the woman that I am today. I can only hope and pray for their continued guidance and support for me to carry on their legacy.

I don’t like to stereotype moms because let’s face it – we all got dumped into motherhood without a rule book or an owner’s manual to tell you how to operate and care for this little human being that was peeing all over you, spitting up all over your best outfit, or screaming bloody murder in the middle of the Sunday sermon.

We learned how to mother (and how NOT to mother) from our own life experiences and those women that surrounded us during our formative years.

So, along with the quotes that you find interspersed throughout this post, I wanted to share some of the funny, heartfelt, and downright snarky aspects of motherhood with you for Mother’s Day to close out our Friday Finds Mother’s Day Edition. Enjoy my friends!

Yes, my sons (and husband) are fully aware that they are the reason for my drinking copious amounts of wine at least 90% of the time.

I still can’t get my sons to remember my birthday, let alone Mother’s Day.

I wonder if I’ll get breakfast in bed Sunday or if the testosterone carriers and the dog will eat it first.

Last but not least, be sure to check out our tribute to all the mothers of the world in our Mother’s Day category and find some great gift ideas on our Pinterest board as well as past articles here.

Happy Mother’s Day!
