Well dear friends – I do actually believe that old man winter has packed up his snow machine and decided to head north for the remainder of the year. Temperatures were in the 70s and 80s this week and are forecast to be mid-80s for the weekend with a few thunderstorms. Bring ’em on I say, I love a good thunderstorm!

Half of Teens Say Financial Independence from Parents Isn’t a Goal

While this isn’t exactly a Friday Finds product per se, it was interesting and so therefore I wanted to share. A Financial Literacy Month Survey by Junior Achievement USA and AIG delves into teens’ concerns about money and plans for the future – or their lack thereof as the case may be.

The 2018 JA Teens and Personal Finance Survey by the Junior Achievement USA and AIG finds that only half of the teens state that becoming financially independent of their parents was one of their future goals.

Only half.

“Millennials have been referred to as ‘the Boomerang Generation’ because during the economic recovery many of them moved back home with their parents after college due to a weak job market and high student loan debt,” said ack Kosakowski, President and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. “This survey may be showing that today’s teens, Generation Z, could be seeing that as a situation they will encounter down the road.”

Teens stated their financial goals for the future included:

  • Graduating from college (75%)
  • Creating a savings plan (50%)
  • Being able to afford international travel (37%)
  • Starting their own business (30%)
  • Retiring before age 65 (29%)

They were also asked to share their top concerns for their future which were:

  • Being able to pay for college (54%)
  • Finding a fulfilling and well-paying job (52%)
  • Not being able to afford their own home (49%)
  • Not having skills to manage money (42%)
  • Not having savings for an emergency (41%)

It should be interesting to note that girls who took the survey tended to have higher levels of concern than did the boys.

Bonding Bees Subscription Box

Couples constantly breaking up, it’s a hard pill to swallow, especially when you are one half of a couple splitting. These days it’s so easy to fall into a routine that lacks little romance. After the kids are tucked in, the dogs fed, the kitchen cleaned up – so many couples are just too exhausted to communicate, let alone spend time together just being a couple.

Everyday life gets in the way.

So why not give a Bonding Bees subscription box a chance? This monthly subscription box has 4 fun stages of activities for couples to reconnect from the comfort of their own home! • Three levels of subscriptions include: Curious (month to month), Crushing (3 months), and Committed (6 months).

Wide as the Wind by Edward Stanton (book)

If you aren’t sure how to celebrate Earth Day (April 22) or Arbor Day (April 27) this year with your kids – we might have the answer for you! Acclaimed book Wide as the Wind has been awarded the Feathered Quill Award in the Teen Fiction category. This beautifully written coming-of-age novel is an engaging adventure as well as a cautionary tale on the perils of climate change, perfect for young readers and parents looking for books that meld the genres of cli-fi, exploration/action, diversity topics, historical fiction, and YA.

Wide as the Wind is the first novel to deal with the stunning, tragic history of Easter Island (Vaitéa). It could be described as quest fiction for all ages in the line of Tolkien’s The Hobbit, but it is set in the real world, not Middle-earth. Wide as the Wind portrays Polynesian voyages across the Pacific Ocean in canoes with no metal parts or instruments: the greatest adventure in human prehistory, as bold as modern space voyages (National Geographic).

When Vaitéa is ravaged by war, hunger and destruction, it falls upon Miru, the fifteen-year-old son of a tribal warrior, to sail to a distant island to find the seeds and shoots of trees that could reforest their homeland. If he decides to undertake the voyage, he must leave behind Kenetéa, a young woman from an enemy tribe with whom he has fallen deeply in love. And if Miru and his crew survive the storms, sharks and marauding ships that await them on a journey over uncharted ocean, an even greater mission would lie ahead. They must show their people that devotion to the earth and sea can be as strong as war and hatred. Wide as the Wind is both a stirring novel of discovery and a prophetic tale for our times.
