Friday Rant on Politics: Support Feeding America

I don’t normally rant and rave about politics here on the blog until it is about something that is near and dear to my heart. Quite frankly, I’m madder than a wet hen right about now with our government – Congress in particular. I still love the Prez, because I think I’m one of the few people that understands his hands are tied quite a bit more than people think by the idiots that we’ve elected to Congress. But THAT my dear readers, is an entirely different rant and rave for another day.

I received an email from Feeding America today informing me that the House passed a bill yesterday that will cut $39 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps). Do you know what that means? That means that in 2014, there will be 1.5 BILLION meals lost to families and children in need.

I’m on the fence about SNAP for one simple reason – I have seen, with my own eyes, people abusing the system and receiving food stamps that shouldn’t be receiving food stamps – and seen those that desperately need it receive a pittance of just $14 a month in food stamps for a family of four because they happened to be a mere $25 over the income limitations. Is it a perfect system? No. It requires a major overhaul and a better method of checks and balances that will enable the people who desperately need the assistance to receive it and those that are “working the system” to be found out and kicked out.

However, having been in the position of being on food stamps as well as not – I know that having that assistance each month to help feed your children is, at times, the only food that they receive during the month (unless they are in school at the time and receiving meals at school as well) and attempting to make even $150 stretch is no easy task.

Take just a moment to read the information from Feeding America that came out today here, and then contact your senators and congressmen and urge them to do something specifically in YOUR state as well!

Simply put, no matter how you look at it, our government is in no position to take care of our needs (considering they are on the verge of a financial shutdown at the end of the month!) and the only way that things are going to change is if each of us steps up and gives a voice to the issues and causes that concern us and those near and dear to us!

Speak your mind and let your voice be heard, America!
