Global Youth Service Day recognizes the impact that young people have on their communities. You don’t have to wait until you are a grown up to change the world! Held each year in April, GYSD is a time for millions of young people from around the world to come together to celebrate their accomplishments and community service projects. Tough community issues are addressed and they help to raise awareness to correct these issues. There are GYSD projects in all 50 states, more than 100 countries and six continents – that is a LOT of kids making a difference! GYSD is the largest service event in the WORLD.

How You Can Help
Parents are welcome to join their children at the event! You can download a PDF of service projects provided by the GYSD Youth Planning Coalition by clicking here.
In addition to the informational and project booths that you can visit, there will also be Minute-to-Win-It games, pizza and snacks, and mini-service projects (see the downloadable PDF link above). Something that is not listed in the PDF is an environmental project (something that I know my youngest is going to love!) called “Treasure Boxes.” Boxes provided by Apple Spice Junction are decorated with random craft supplies that the coalition has collected over the years and it is always so much fun to do!
When Is It?
This event kicks off on MARCH 15, 2014 from 11am to 1pm at the Brock Fitness Center of Randolph-Macon College at 202 Henry Street in Ashland, Virginia. For this local event you can contact Laura Robertson at larobertson@hanovercounty.gov for more information.
What If I Cannot Attend That Day?
If you cannot make it out on March 15th, the projects have been uploaded so that students can sign up to do them at www.handsonrva.org. There are a lot of DIY projects so kids can take a leadership role and do a service project on their own terms.
What project are you and your family going to participate in to celebrate Global Youth Service Day? Check with your local agency or if you are not sure where to find the information – you can go here and enter your city and state information and find out what projects are going on locally.
Let us know what you are going to do and we’ll share our photos with our readers as well in the coming months!
