How to Give Your Home Curb Appeal

When you take pride in your home, it shows by your home’s curb appeal. Having worked as a leasing assistant and being in the apartment community business with my husband for the past 15 years, you learn that curb appeal is one of THE most important aspects when making a first impression on people.

It’s wonderful when homeowners and apartment residents take pride in their home and work to improve the curb appeal of the place you call home. There are subtle changes you can make that give off a great first impression.

Whether you are looking to add color, fix up some things that have been neglected or you simply want ideas for making the front of your home look more appealing, here are some tips for how to give your property a lift.

Signage

Signage adds to curb appeal

It might seem simple, but choosing to display your houses’ number or name on a personalized and high-quality sign outside your property, really elevates your property’s exterior. A custom metal sign is a great focal point and is the first thing a visitor may see. A large, ornate sign with your property’s name in the center, or a more subtle but high-quality looking number sign above your door – let everyone in the neighborhood know that you’re a proud homeowner.

Refinish Your Front Door

Refinish your front door

Believe it or not, your front door has a lot to do with your overall curb appeal. If your door is old or outdated or simply a dull color, you can easily refinish it and give it new life. Simply choose a stain or paint color that will brighten up your front doorway and create a welcoming feeling for guests and passers-by. It’s inexpensive too, and the cost of increasing your curb appeal? Priceless.

Consider Lighting

Lighting dramatically changes your curb appeal

There are so many ways that you can add decorate lighting to your home, walkway or garden. Decorative lights help to make your home feel more welcoming and add beauty to your front yard or walkway. Whether you choose to go with traditional store-bought lighting or you want to create your own, adding lights is a great way to improve curb appeal.

Paint Your House

If you really want to spruce up your home’s exterior and you have some time and money to spare, you could always paint the outside of your house. Painting is not something that you necessarily have to hire someone to do. Once you choose the color and type of paint that you want, you just have to clear a weekend or two and just paint over that old paint, giving your home a fresh new look that is sure to be noticed.

Mow Your Lawn

Mowing the lawn is absolutely the best way to improve your home’s kerb appeal. Depending on where you live and how much rain and sunlight you get, you may find yourself mowing at least once or twice each week during the summer months. During spring and fall however, about once a week or once every other week should suffice. Keeping your lawn properly maintained and manicured will instantly raise your home’s value and it costs very little and takes very little time.
