How You Can “Chippin” to Help Dogs Eat Better

Disclosure: I received samples of Chippin pet food products for the purpose of trying them out and letting my readers know what Momo and I thought of them. Opinions are 100% my own and have not been influenced in any manner. I can’t say the same for Momo since she’s been scarfing them down like there’s no tomorrow!

Mollyanna (“Momo”) is our Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix who has been a member of our family since 2009. She will be celebrating her 15th birthday (human years) on November 3rd this year, which is 83 years old in dog years.

Momo is also very overweight because my husband can’t resist those sad brown eyes she lays on him. I can’t get him to eat proper meals throughout the day at specific times … but he makes sure Momo gets her 3 meals a day at 7 AM, 12 PM, and 5 PM every single day. Trust me, she has an internal clock too and she will start bouncing around like a jackrabbit when it is time to eat and will pace the floor till you do feed her.

Those sad brown eyes don’t work on me. I make her walk, I send her outside to run and play when the neighbor dogs are out, and I switched her to fresh dog food instead of the processed junk that you find on the shelves nowadays.

Now mind you, she will eat almost anything … but she’s also particular in a dog sort of way. If it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner time she will most likely eat anything you put in front of her. Other times, however, she is a bit more particular and has to sniff everything before she decides to take a bite.

So when the Chippin snacks and dog food arrived and I saw the ingredients, I was a little fearful that she would turn her nose up and not want anything to do with any of it.

Two of the things that caught my eye about Chippin? They are transforming the pet industry with foods that are better for our dogs and better for our planet. Secondly, Chippin is a woman-owned, sustainable pet nutrition company committed to providing high-quality, delicious food that reduces the carbon pawprint. Our pets are family – it’s high time we started feeding them like family and care about what they eat!

So What Makes Chippin Different?

Chippin products are hypoallergenic, scientifically shown to be more digestible than chicken (which she also loves), certified plastic neutral, and 80% less resource-intensive than regular options. Chippin pet food features cricket, spirulina, and silver carp (a heavily over-populated fish) and is created with board-certified veterinary nutritionists and PhDs. Not to mention the farmers and fisheries that provide the ingredients are partners with Chippin that they know and trust.

What Are the Product Benefits?

We are going to break down the benefits of each of the three main ingredients in Chippin for you below.

Cricket Product Benefits. Momo loves crickets. We have a ton of them around here in the spring, summer, and fall – and she is constantly chasing them and trying to grab them. Cricket protein is actually a natural form of protein for dogs – something I was not aware of. It’s also highly digestible, so dogs like Momo can absorb more nutrients. Crickets also act as a prebiotic to support gut health, reduce inflammation, and boosts immune systems, not to mention it is a hypoallergenic form of protein.

Spirulina: Secrets of the Ancients Revealed

Spirulina Benefits. What the heck is spirulina, right? It happens to be a blue-green algae that contains 55% protein! The Aztecs of Latin America and the Kanembu people of Lake Chad, Africa have harvested spirulina for centuries, and only recently has the remainder of the world begun to understand the health benefits those algae provide. It is also anti-allergen, reduces inflammation, boosts the immune system, acts as a probiotic, and actually takes co2 out of the atmosphere rather than emitting it.

Silver Carp Product Benefits. Silver Carp is high in Omega-3 and all 10 essential amino acids. Chippin sources their silver carp directly from United States fishermen with 100% human-grade silver carp, which is safe for human and pet consumption. Again, a hypoallergenic protein for dogs with common protein allergies.

By using this overpopulated fish in their products, Chippin is helping to restore biodiversity to United States waterways and protect the great lakes. Silver Carp fished from these waterways contain no trace of harmful bacteria or contaminants such as E.coli, yeast, mold, staphylococcus aureus, salmonella, listeria, mercury, and lead – items that are all commonly known to be in fish like tuna. Why is the silver carp such a clean fish? Because they are vegetarian top feeders, which reduces the risk of heavy metals accumulation.

Momo absolutely loved the dog food – which frankly surprised me because it wasn’t her usual soft food that we feed her. She inhaled it like a kid having a soda pop for the first time! Two thumbs up for the dog food.

She also loves the antioxidant dog treat/snack with bananas, cricket, and blueberry. We haven’t tried the smokehouse BBQ one yet but I’m sure she will love that equally.

Good for the Environment

Did we mention how environmentally friendly Chippin products are? When compared with the equivalent amount of beef protein per bag, Chippin products save this much water:

  • Spirulina Treats – saves 40 gallons of water
  • Cricket Crunchy Treats – saves 40 gallons of water
  • Cricket Jerky – saves 150 gallons of water
  • Silver Carp Jerky – saves 300 gallons of water
  • Cricket Topper – saves 250 gallons of water
  • Silver Carp Daily Food – saves 1,000 gallons of water

It only takes 1 gallon of water to produce one pound of cricket protein, but 2,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef protein!
