Imagine when you come home after a long day at work. You drop your bag on the floor, thinking you want to wind down a bit before making dinner. Suddenly, the phone vibrates.
$*#&! Well, this was not expected. You message back:
What you really meant was…
You rush into the kitchen trying to put something together. Pasta? That’s a great idea! But you already had pasta 2 days in a row, and honestly you really don’t feel like standing by the stove boiling noodles and cooking sauce. Ok, how about hands off cooking? Darn, that’s exactly it!
BAD: Oven? Unfortunately not in this case, it will take 20 minutes just to pre-heat the oven.
WORSE: Slow cooker? Even worse, you don’t have 8 hours to cook. Your husband would rather eat dry noodles than waiting for 8 hours.
Now imagine you come home, tired, and want to wind down for a bit. Your husband messages you to let you know he is coming home in 20 minutes and FYI he is very hungry too. You calmly walk into the kitchen. Pull out your rice cooker, drop all the ingredients in, and hit the COOK button. Voila! It literally took you 5 minutes to put all the ingredients together.
While the rice cooker is working hard prepping dinner for your family, you turn on the TV to check on the latest news, take a refreshing shower, and put a tab of perfume on. You are now relaxed, fresh, and ready to welcome your husband home. While you are flipping through a fashion magazine, your husband arrives home. You welcome him with a kiss and a “How was your day today, dear? Dinner will be ready in 5 minutes.”
Your family sits down for dinner and you serve an incredibly flavorful Spanish rice with smoked sausage and spicy chunky salsa. He takes the first bite and is amazed. He really thought you spent the day making this dish. Little does he know, it took you only 5 minutes and the rest is our
dirty little secret. Shhh…

Dinner is Served!
How would this make you feel, if you could spend more time for yourself and less time in the kitchen? And more importantly, what would you love to do during that free time? Grab the recipe below and be sure to let us know how you enjoyed this easy, no-fuss meal!
- 112.5 grams (1/4 pound) smoked sausage, cut into cubes
- 1 1/2 cup white rice
- 1 cup salsa (we used hot chunky salsa for more flavor)
- 2 cup chicken broth (we used 30% reduced sodium broth)
- 1 onion, diced
- Add rice to the rice cooker pot and rinse well 2-3 times until water is clear
- Drain as much water as possible from the pot
- Add your cubed smoked sausage, salsa, chicken broth, and onion to the pot
- Press the "Cook" button
Your rice should be fully cooked after one cycle using a rice cooker, taste just in case. If needed, you can press the "Cook" button again and allow a few more minutes to cook.
I Don't Have a Rice Cooker!
No worries, man! After you wash your rice, add all the remaining ingredients into a regular pot and cook UNCOVERED on medium-high heat; just until the chicken broth starts boiling.
Reduce heat to medium-low and cook COVERED for 20 minutes, or until rice is cooked and tender.
