Just like everything else in this age of endless choices, there are infinite options when it comes to choosing seating for your living room space. The shapes, styles, and customization options can be overwhelming. But you can save yourself money and time by using these tips to picking the perfect armchair.

Size Counts

If you have a larger living room, you’re going to have to decide how much of it you want your chair to fill. Will you be including a coffee table or other sofas? If so, a simple chair will be the best fit. But if you want seating that will be the focal point, look for rounder varieties that take up more of the room and offer plush seating.

If you have a smaller space, you’ll need a more compact chair. It’s still going to be in the spotlight so pick something practical with strong designs that complement the rest of your room.

How Will You Chair Be Arranged?

Successfully arranging a living space starts with looking at your lifestyle. What do you the space most for? Do you like to relax in front of the TV? Then make sure the armchair faces that direction. Prefer hosting games or wine nights? Create a semi-circle around a table. If your living room is more for relaxing and reading, surround your chair with cushions to create a comfy seating area that can be enjoyed individually.

Which Shapes will Suit the Room Best?

Once you’ve decided the function of your chair, figure out which shape is going to help fulfill that purpose. Rounder shaped are more ideal for smaller spaces that serve as a gathering area for the family, but can also work well for a TV room. If you want to include more chairs and tables, a daybed or chaise will work well and offer seating for several people.

Materials and Upholstery – What Will Be Best for You?

Aesthetics are important but the key is functionality when it comes to picking materials for your chairs. While many of us would love to indulge in white and plush suedes, these colors are dangerous. Suede isn’t a good choice if you have small children or pets that can cause some serious, expensive damage. Leather, especially in darker colors, is a consistent style that tends to wear well with age and is pretty easy to clean.

You could also have your chair upholstered in an outdoor type of fabric that resists stains, water, and sun fading.

A Style to Complement Your Home

It’s difficult trying to nail down your very own personal style, but go with your instincts when choosing a chair to fit naturally in your space. If you prefer sleek and modern, go for something with clean lines and rather dramatic colors. But if your house is a mix of designs and colors, a chair that combines several styles, such as a vintage piece with colorful fabric in a modern shape could be the perfect expression of your preferences.

If you prefer something a bit more traditional, a more classically structured chair in a neutral and durable fabric is going to stand the test of time and work great with various shades.

Choosing Colors – Neutral, Bright or Printed?

It’s fairly inexpensive to have furniture re-upholstered, so you can now easily personalize your chair. Don’t be scared to choose fun and unique prints that can add a personal touch as well as quick transformation to the entire room’s feel.

If you’re a little nervous to experiment with bright colors and patterns, opt for a funky ottoman that will double as a coffee table. This can add a subtle sense of diversity to the living space while perfectly complementing the chair.
