Everyone goes through tough times at some point – it’s just a fact of life – but when it is happening to someone you care about, it can be almost too difficult to bear. However, bear it you must because your loved one needs you, and actually doing what you can to support them can help you both get back to a better place.
With that in mind, here are a few things you can do to really help and support a loved one through tough times:
Talk To Them
Sometimes, it can be hard to approach a family member or loved one who is going through a hard time, especially if it something sensitive like an addiction that they are dealing with, but by remaining silent, you could be hurting them more than they know, so even just letting them know that you see their pain and you are there for them if they need to talk can make the world of difference.
Get Them The Right Help
Whether you hire the spodek law group to help them with their legal issues, pay for them to receive addiction counseling, or arrange for them to see a therapist to help with their mental health issues, sometimes, the best way you can support a loved one through tough times is by helping them to access the professional support they need. Obviously, that doesn’t mean you should just leave them to it – you should still be there for them holding their hand every step of the way – but there is only so much you can do, and helping them access the right help is a huge act of love that should not be understated.
Give Them Time and Space
It can be tempting to crowd a loved one and throw everything you can at them to try and make them feel better, but this can backfire. Although you should check in regularly, and make sure they know that you are there for them whenever they need you, you should not be pushy or too forceful in trying to make them better, whatever that means for them. They may need more space and time than you think to come to terms with their troubles, and trying to push that along will really not help.
Don’t Make It About You
One trap a lot of people fall into when their family member or friend is having a tough time is making it about them. They talk about how it makes them feel or how disappointed they are, hoping it will shake their loved one out of whatever they are dealing with and give them a wakeup call, but usually, it just makes them feel worse, and they will sink further into the hole they have found themselves in, so try to keep your own thoughts and feelings out if it, especially if they are negative.
Supporting a loved one through tough times can be tricky, but you can do it, just make sure that you take good care of yourself along the way too.
