OK, so packing up the kids and taking them to one of the busiest and most bustling cities in the world might not seem like the best idea at first.
I know what traveling with kids and luggage in New York City is like first-hand. I made a trip, by bus, to New Hampshire from Virginia in 2001 and had a 3-hour layover in New York City. I got the bright idea to walk to Times Square with a 12-year-old, a 1-year-old, diaper bag, purse, backpack, stroller, and a gigantic suitcase. It took us so long to get through the crowds and readjust our grip on the bags every few minutes that we literally had about 15 minutes to look at everything and then had to run back to the bus station so we didn’t miss our bus!
I wish I knew THEN what I know now – LuggageHero! Only $1/hour (+$2 handling fee) and never more than $8/day. The handling fee includes security seals and insurance with coverage up to $3000 for each bag and no other hidden fees. You only pay for the time you actually store your luggage. Plans change and you don’t need storage? No problem – you pay nothing if you don’t show up for your booking.
Armed with that bit of advice, you will be pleased to discover that New York can, in fact, be the perfect location for a family getaway, especially as there are so many kid-friendly activities and sites to see. Just read on to find out about the ones you should definitely not miss.
Coney Island
Located on the shoreline of the lower bay Coney Island is a must-visit site for anyone that has kids. In fact, it perfect for little one and adults alike because there you will find the world famous Luna Park which is an old-school fun fair. Ride the more traditional attractions like the Clipper, Astro Tower, or the Coney Island Cyclone a 2,640 feet roller coaster that has 12 drops!
Alternatively, there are some newer style rides as well such as the Tickler, the Soaring Eagle and the Endeavor which are sure to thrill. Of course, there are also tradition funfair stalls with snacks and games so, don’t forget to try your luck at Fried Frogs or Whack-A-Mole! Maybe you might even win a prize or two, if you are lucky?
The food at Coney Island is of quick and easy variety mostly, and it’s a great place to grab a snack to fill a gap with a White Castle Express and two stands that are seductively named Fried Delights. Places where you can indulge in battered and deep-fried Twinkies and Oreos amongst other delicacies. Something the kids will adore as a one-off treat!
A Broadway Show
Once you have had all the fun of the fair at Luna Park, then why not head over to the theatre district to take in a Broadway show? Of course, these are sure to please as they are big, bright, and entertaining productions with lots of singing and dancing that will mesmerize even the shortest of attention spans.
There is an excellent range of productions being performed at any one time to choose from as well. Although, if you are looking for something that is utterly New York, why not try A Bronx Tale? It gets excellent reviews, and as the legendary Robert De Niro directs it, this comes as no surprise!
Bronx Zoo
Last of all, when visiting New York with the kids a fantastic place to see in the Bronx Zoo. Located in Bronx Park the Zoo boots al sort of exotic animals such as Giraffes, Polar Bears, Brown Bears, Tigers and even some Cheetah cubs!
There is even a children’s petting zoo, and a butterfly garden to enjoy as well. Although, if you little ones are looking for something a bit more adrenaline filled, why not buy them a ticket for the treetop adventure where they can climb ropes, walks bridges, and zip line from platform to platform safely? An activity that will provide them with an outdoor experience in New York that they will never forget.
