Understanding the Difference Between Clean and Tidy

When it comes to home management, many of us have different ideas of perfection. The standards of tidiness and cleanliness that we set for ourselves vary and what one person might think of as clean and tidy may differ greatly from another’s. However, regardless of your standards, have you ever considered how “clean” and “tidy” are different words often used in the same sentence. This is because they aren’t exchangeable. They mean different things. Believe it or not, you can, in fact, have a home that is clean but not tidy or tidy but not clean. So, let’s take a look at the difference to ensure that you can do both to keep your property as pristine as possible!

Just what does "clean" mean?

What is “Clean”?

So, let’s look at the other task that goes towards making a home look great: cleaning. Cleaning entails getting down to the nitty gritty and removing dirt, dust, grime, and consequent bad odours  from all areas of your property. You’d be surprised how quickly these things build up, so ideally you should carry out a thorough clean of your home on a weekly basis. However, spills should be cleaned up immediately, and the kitchen work surfaces should also be cleaned down on a daily basis to prevent the spread of bacteria and germs.

Cleaning Must-Haves

The basic cleaning must-haves are relatively obvious: a vacuum cleaner, dusters, sponges, cloths, and disinfectants. But consider specialist products too! Carpet cleaners with additional brushes are useful. As are air fresheners, fabric sprays for upholstery, and air purifiers. Find out more about these at homecleanexpert.com.

What does "tidy" mean?

What is “Tidy”?

When your home is “tidy”, everything is in its place. You’ve allocated individual spots for individual items, and they have been replaced there once they’ve been used. The opposite of “tidy” is “messy” – when items are left sprawled around with neither reason nor rhyme. The key to maintaining a tidy home is organization. You should tidy to an extent on a daily basis. It requires self-control, but once you get into the habit of immediately putting things back where they belong, you’ll realize that it’s really not all that much effort.

Tidying Must-Haves

Tidying is mainly a matter of forcing yourself to put things back in their proper place. But there are certain bits and bobs that you can invest in to make this easier. To avoid a floordrobe (your wardrobe on the floor) invest in more than just a wardrobe.

Many items are easily hung up, but it’s often the items that aren’t hung as easily that end up flung over door frames, bannisters, and chairs. So invest in drawers for underwear, socks, tights, and pyjamas. Also, consider under bed storage for your shoes or tie racks for smaller accessories such as ties and scarves. Put up bookshelves for your books to prevent them from being left scattered over tables and work surfaces.

As you can see, both cleaning and tidying work towards making your home presentable. But while they are indeed different activities, they are ones that you need to give attention to in equal measures!
